Winning run isn't anything special - Flournoy

Fab Flournoy

CLINCHING the record for Newcastle Eagles’ best BBL start would mean “nothing” to Fab Flournoy.

Eagles can move to 5-0 for the league season if they beat the inconsistent Cheshire Jets tomorrow in a game that Flournoy is warning will be a stern examination of their ability to win on the road.

As well as giving them a stranglehold on the embryonic league table, it would also help them make history by becoming the fastest-starting Eagles side in the BBL era.

But Flournoy – who was up in the early hours to watch Duke University coach Mike Krzyzewski become the most successful coach in the history of college basketball this week – will respectfully pass on any celebrations.

“It wouldn’t mean anything to me. Absolutely zilch,” Flournoy said.

“It is an accomplishment that would help us in our goal of winning the league and for that I obviously want us to get there – but five wins isn’t anything to celebrate.

“I was watching Mike Krzyzewski getting his 903rd win with Duke this week – that is the most in Division I college basketball. That is a real testament to that programme that marks it out in history and is really era-defining. That is some accomplishment.

“Five wins is pretty easily obtained, if I’m going to be honest. Plus every year we have the chance to replicate that whereas 903 wins is something absolutely apart from anything.”
