QUALITY catches have been taken all along the coastline.
Both Ivan Stott and Dave Crudas fished Lynemouth Beach in Seaton Sluice’s match, Stott taking seven cod and a flounder for 26lb 11oz. His best at 7lb 5oz, taken on his last cast, was the best of the night, the best of the month, and best of the year.
Crudas weighed in five cod for 19lb, Alan Thain taking a single cod of 6lb 1oz during a pleasure session there.
Gary Arkle landed the first double in Amble’s matches this winter, weighing 10lb 6.5oz. Steve Surtees, fishing at Newbiggin, had a bag of four cod for 18lb 1oz, the best 5lb 1oz, to win Bedlington Station’s match.
Brian Wild, fishing at Craster, thought he was bringing in a ball of weed only for a personal best cod of 8lb popping out the water tail first.
Tyne estuary is fishing well for mixed bags. Bob Gascoigne won Tynemouth’s retired members match with 24 whiting and three dabs for 17lb 4oz, Ken Robinson taking 22 whiting and four dabs for 16lb 4oz. Neil Lindsay won Longbenton’s match with a bag of 15lb, best 4lb 10oz.
Harry Elliott took the heaviest bag of 9lb 8oz and heaviest fish of 4lb 8oz from the pier to win South Shields’ match, followed by Andrew Nickerson with 8lb 6oz.
Terry Wood took a cod of 5lb 10oz to win Cleadon’s heaviest fish match, Steve Gordon taking the heaviest bag of 15 fish for 11lb 14oz.
Fishing up the river at Hendon, Dave Raymond took cod of 5lb and 6lb, while Paul Hague, fishing at Jarrow, took cod of 5lb 12oz, 2lb 9oz, and 3lb 4oz on his first three casts.
South of the Tyne, Eddie Turnbull took his 14-year-old son Jackson fishing at the Hall beach. In among their catch was a personal best cod of 7lb for Jackson.
Easington angler Dennis Haliday took a cod of 9lb 8oz. Richie Carr and Chris Hossack fished at Whitburn, taking seven cod to 5lb.
The Wear estuary is giving good sport with whiting anglers taking up to 20 per session with some touching the 2lb mark.
The Glass Centre is giving up a few decent cod with the whiting, Ernie Hunter taking one of 5lb to win Eastenders Open.
The New Ship Inn Newbiggin Xmas sweepstake takes place on Wednesday. Register at the New Ship pub (Top Ship) between 7.45am and 8.15am, fish 9am-1pm, weigh-in at the rear of New Ship from 1.30pm-2.30pm.
