Tyne is still good to fish

ALTHOUGH incessant rain ruined angling on the Wear as well as the Swale and Ure, the Tyne was fishable in parts last weekend. Big Waters stalwarts Jim Armstrong and Roy Small had a successful day on Sunday fishing a fast rising river on the Federation’s Ovingham Bridge stretch – catching minnows, eels, dace and roach to maggot/feeder tactics. Although there have been a good number of cod taken, including monsters of 30lb plus, with a good few big doubles from the Tyne and Hartlepool, it was ling that took the top prizes in the Fraser's Boat Competition for the heaviest fish. Read

Derwent (01207 255250): Heavy rain has increased water level to what it was pre-season which has improved access for all anglers. Best patterns: Dawson's olive, black fritz, damsels, diawl bach and PTN. Best fish: 5lb 8ozs landed by T Moffatt. Read

Yet another week at the mercy of the elements and the outlook for this weekend is for more wet stuff hitting us hard. Read

Reports are encouraging anglers

Although rain has affected running water on the Wear and Tyne for the second weekend of the season, reports of barbel up to 10lb from the Tees along with 4lb-plus chub have been encouraging. while bream are showing in numbers from the lower reaches around Yarm. Read

The rivers Wear and Tees were in full flood this week with fish moving to the upper reaches and the resulting lift allowing fresh fish to move in. These will be held in the pools as the waters begin to drop back and fine off. Read

The heavy rainfall should prove to be a real bonus to the region's river salmon and sea-trout anglers, with fish now moving on most of the local rivers. Read
