Angel complex is producing stunning catches

DESPITE the run of gloomy weather some stunning Koi and Ghost carp are being caught on the Angel complex as they feed up towards winter in the shorter hours of daylight.

Ide and Orfe to 2lb are also coming into there and large perch, some over 2lb, are being caught. Iain Gillespie, from Durham, estimated he had over 200lb of carp and Melvin Trotter also from Durham had a constant "fish a chuck" from blades to bream at 8lb 7oz.

Fishing WACAC’s Queen Elizabeth II Country Park Lake at Ashington, 14-year-old Regan Hogg missed out on a junior club record by just 2oz, when he won a battle with a superb 20lb 1oz mirror carp, in only his first season of carp fishing. Elsewhere, Aldin Grange's Blackbird Lake has been in form and Ray Laing took over 60lb from the Bearpark day ticket water.

Despite the blustery conditions, anglers who ventured out on Derwent Reservoir landed some fine roach up to 1lb 12oz, and Mr C Morrison recorded a catch of 15lb.

At Whittle Dene only 15 anglers braved the windy conditions and only two recorded their catches. Mr Harvey fishing the lower lake recorded 8lb of roach, while Dave Coster managed to catch 9lb of quality roach from the Great Southern.

The North East Winter League match held on the, River Tees, at Yarm saw Richy Newton catch 12 bream on feeder and worm, to win with 44lb.

Pete Rambow Snr was runner-up on 40lb 12oz and Louis McIntosh third with 31lb 5oz on a day when the Top Team was the Browning Quaker side.

Thornaby AA's match on the Tees, at Croft to Hurworth went to Josh Newton with 10lb 4oz of dace and grayling taken on stick float and maggot, while Nigel Rance of Darlington Angling Centre won the Yarm AA event with 20lb 9oz of bream and skimmers.

Sunday’s Open League match on The Angel was won by Dave Pearson with 50lb 7oz ahead of Neil Brown in second on 44lb and junior angler Jonny Maven third with 32lb 14oz, while Wednesday’s Open on Bowes was won by Peter Smith 33lb 3oz.

Wansbeck & Cramlington AC fished the last match of their OAP/Disabled Series during the week, where George Emerson won with 5lb 4oz, ahead of Les Evans with 2lb 3oz and Terry Glennie third with 1lb 4oz. The final placings however, saw first and second places reversed.

WACAC fished their annual Charity Shield match in the QE Reservoir recently where Alan Redhead took the honours with 2lb 4oz just pipping, Derek Dixon by a single ounce.

Big Waters AC have announced the dates for this years Winter League Series. They are as follows: November 20, Bowes Lake; December 4, Renny's Lake; December 18, still to be decided; January 8, Aldin Grange; January 22, Bowes; February 5, Renny's Lake; February 26, Aldin Grange; March 11, still to be decided.

An update on Killingworth is the EA's position is still that the water should be closed to water sports because of blue green algae.

Sunday: Lookout Lake hosts a match – draw at 9am, fishing 10.30am-3.30pm – while Aycliffe AC fish a Winter Series match on Aycliffe Pond and Sunderland FAC contest a Winter Series match on Silksworth. Big Waters AC have a club match on the Tyne at Newburn, while Wansbeck and Cramlington AC hold their annual Pike Match on the QE2, Ashington. Even though it’s only October, Newcastle University EAC fish their Xmas Cheer match on Knowesgate and this weekend’s big running water open is at Ripon, where The Ure Championships take place.

Tuesday: A meeting of the Tyne Anglers’ Alliance will be held at the Empire CIU Club on Salter’s Road, Gosforth, to which all member clubs are asked to send a delegate.

Wednesday: Midweek opens are scheduled for The Angel – drawing at 9am, fishing 10.30am-3.30pm – and Woodlands.

Thursday: The Oaks at Sessay hosts an open.
