Anglers tempted by Tees and Eden

A FEW anglers were tempted out by the weekend thaw and again grayling from both Cumbria’s River Eden and Teesside’s Cod Beck provided some sport. The Yorkshire rivers such as the Swale and Ure are capable of producing chub whatever the temperature, mainly to static ledgered baits taken in the late afternoon when the light begins to fade.

Although the Tees was frozen around Yarm, Browning Quaker angler Mal Dunlop was top rod in a small friendly match fished near Darlington after last weekend’s Winter League fixture fell victim to the ice, and what a return he had. Using stick float fished maggot he landed no less than 11 chub, to weigh in an unbelievable 39lb near Darlington.

Thornaby AA’s match went ahead on the River Tees at Croft on Sunday where Mick Sweeney won with 7lb 12oz, made up of two fish, a bream and a chub taken on stick float fished maggot. Dave Oxley of Darlington was runner-up with 7lb 1oz ahead of Gary Ingliss with 5lb 12oz and Dave Firth with 3lb 12oz

This year’s Big Waters AC agm was held last month. Chairman Steve Freer gave his address, speaking of how well all the club’s waters have fared this year.

Among the main points mentioned were the need for attendance at work parties to continue if the waters are to improve and how Dissington Pond has produced good weights.

The re-election of all club committee members was passed and it was agreed that the club’s membership fees would increase by £2 for 2011, but with no addition to juniors fees which will remain at £10.

A free raffle produced a bottle of whisky won by the chairman, which was presented to Les Goreham for his work with the fish transfers. Thanks to the kind permission from Northumbrian Water and the Environment Agency, quality roach were caught and then transferred from Fontburn and Derwent reservoirs.

All in all over 1,000 roach were moved into Dissington and 531 fish, weighing a total of 227 lb went into Marden Quarry.

After a fantastic 2010 Match Series that saw more than £3000 in cash and more than £600 in prizes given away, Broom fishery owner John Wright has announced the dates for the 2011 event. Next year fields of 26 anglers per match will contest the series on: May 15, June 5 and 26, July 3, August 7 and 28 while September 10 and 11 will be finals weekend.

The cost is £160, made up of the entry charge plus the match fee. To book phone 01461 700209 or email: info@broomfisheries.co.uk
