Coster is cashing in on our top sport

DAVE Coster, angling writer and now coarse product manager at Hardy Greys, has been enjoying some excellent sport on Whittle Dene since he relocated to Alnwick from Essex.
Dave has been to Whittle Dene a couple of times and is starting to get to grips with the Lower Reservoir.
“I had 30lb of quality roach between the feeder, waggler and pole a week ago, while last trip I had close to 20lb fishing the pole,” he said.
“I feel 40lb-plus weights are on the cards, which tells me this is some of the best roach fishing in the country!”
Another angler among the fish this week at Whittle Dene was W Meesan with a 14lb mixed catch of roach, dace and gudgeon aplenty.
And Whittle Dene reservoirs will host an Open match on Bank Holiday Monday, August 30 to support Water Aid. Tickets will be in tackle shops by this weekend, or bookable from 0191 268 7458, priced at £6 and pools will be available on the day.
Organisers Steve Wood and Peter Hamilton are hoping for a good turnout for the match, from 11am to 4pm, and Northumbria Water are offering a very valuable prize of a year’s free fishing to the winner.
There have been some quality fish caught on all of The Angel’s lakes recently, with a new three-hour match record being set this week.
Paste made from pellets is fishing well, with maggot, worm and caster all producing, while fly fishing for carp – restricted from 5pm to 8pm – is still a method that is catching well.
WACAC’s Brenkley Pond has been on good form, with carp, tench and skimmers featuring in nets over 20lb. A couple of bream approaching double figures have been encountered on the TAA’s Killingworth Lake.
Tony Watson’s fantastic return of 124lb 10oz set a new record for the three-hour Wednesday Open on Bowes, while Sunday’s Open was won by Neil Brown with 70lb 12oz ahead of Ricky Bennett with 63lb 1oz and Tony Watson on 56lb 13oz.
Big Waters AC’s latest match was won by Barry Evans with 55lb 9oz, ahead of Nigel Beardsley, who had 46lb 8oz, and John Mitchell, third with 41lb 11oz.
The latest ‘King of Whins’ match was shaded by Dave Wardman thanks to a 7lb 12oz mirror carp.
Jeff Whittle was second with 7lb 8oz and Ian Corri third with 7lb 5oz, but 11-year-old Josh Wardman was the outstanding angler of the day, landing a 6lb bream, the best of the match.
