DERWENT Reservoir regular Geordie Samms from Chester-le-Street landed the first tiger trout of the month - and the £400 sweepstake - while fishing a Beamish Killer at Millshields.
Alan and Andy Swailham had a great day on Saturday, landing 11 trout, including fish of 7lb, 6lb and 5lb, on a Connemara Black from the north shore next to the valve tower, while Ray Robertson caught the best blue trout of the season – a six-pounder – on Powerbait fished from Murray’s Point.
Fly anglers are experiencing tremendous summer sport with great rises occurring on overcast days and into evening.
Anglers using small dry flies and small black or Bibio Muddlers have enjoyed the most success.
The wild browns were right up on the top this week at Cow Green with an abundance of daddies and sedges providing them with a high-protein menu.
Those anglers opting to fish the washing line method using a Deer Hair Sedge on the point and two Black Buzzer patterns on the droppers, have enjoyed the best of the sport.
Two Cramlington youngsters enjoyed a memorable day at Fontburn, each landing their first trout. Adam Shewry, aged 10, took a cracking 2lb rainbow on float-fished yellow Powerbait eggs and worm, while Conner Cross, 11, took one on Orange Powerbait eggs ledgered from the north shore.
Chris Hind from Prudhoe landed the week’s heaviest fish – a fine 5lb 12oz rainbow from the middle section of the north shore, while R Redhead had a 4lb blue from the south shore.
Colin Garbutt had the week’s best bag with four rainbows and four blues, including specimens of 3lb 12oz and 3lb 6oz, totalling 23lb.
Dave Kirkwood, fishing the north shore, had eight rainbows in little more than four hours.
Spinning has worked well for many this week with some larger blues falling to this method, particularly from the south shore, with D Stafford landing fish of 3lb 4oz and 3lb 8oz. Helen Ridley had one of 3lb 4oz.
C Graham, fly fishing a Peter Ross or Black Pennell from the north shore point, took home two rainbows and a blue, safely returning four, in “a great credit-cruncher afternoon session”.
The deeper areas at Grassholme have continued to provide the best of the sport, with the dam wall in particular producing some very nice fish, as has the west end car park bank.
