WHILE the fishing remains very rewarding on the Stillwater front, the recent improvement in the rivers only adds to the local coarse angler’s choice of venue.
The Tyne has sprung into form with improved water levels. Dace and, refreshingly, quite a few eels are coming off the lower reaches above Wylam. John Urwin took a fine barbel of 9lb 8oz from the Wear recently.
On the Angel lots of big bream have been caught, while the best fish this week was a 26lb 2oz mirror at Bowes lake by Anthony Eade of Durham.
On Lookout, tench are being caught to mussel, squid, and cockles, while on Bowes those fishing the bomb have been doing well and getting some impressive catches of carp and bream.
Bassetts has seen some excellent catches, too, with crucians, orfe, ide, rudd, roach, tench and even gudgeon coming out.
Nets of roach and perch up to 25lb are being reported from the TAA’s Killingworth Lake along with carp to 23lb, and the Big Water’s controlled Marden Quarry at Whitley Bay, open to day-ticket anglers, is also producing quality carp.
On Whittle Dene the northern and lower lakes are producing the best results, with the best catch this week going to Bob Crammer with a fine 20lb catch of skimmers.
Other reportable catches included K Moore with a roach and perch net of 9lb 8oz, while John Sevior took 10lb of skimmers and roach and J Wooley had 6lb of roach and skimmers.
The Tees continues to be the region’s major match river with three events held last weekend.
The Yarm AA match was won by Dave Smiddy with 14lb 8oz of bream, ahead of Pete Rambow jnr, who had 12lb 8oz.
The Thornaby AA match at Croft. saw Brian Stubbs win with14lb 12oz of dace, ahead of Mal Clitheroe with 12lb 8oz, while the NYSD contest at Over Dinsdale saw Mick Smith of Darlington win with three chub for 15lb 2oz. Nick Jose was runner-up with 12lb 4oz.
Sunday’s Open match on Lookout was won by Chris Gowling who used chopped worm and caster to net 66lb 6oz. Chris Owers had 54lb 14oz and Dave Pearson returned 47lb 9oz.
