A range of events to get people involved

THIS weekend sees the start of National Fishing Month, an initiative launched by the Angling Development Board and many other bodies.

The initiative’s timing has been planned to coincide with the school holidays and get youngsters and families involved.

Among the events are one-hour learn to fish taster sessions at The Angel of The North Fishery, Northside. They start tomorrow and take place after that on July 24 and 31 and August 1, 8 and 15, running from 9am to 3pm. Contact Ann Adlington on 0191 4100449.

This Sunday from 10am-3pm an introductions to fly casting and bait fishing take place on the River Derwent, Derwent Park. Invertebrate sampling is also featured. Contact Aidan Pollard on 077537 29192.

Also on Sunday, Langley Park AC hold a brief introduction and participation in coarse angling with tackle and bait supplied. It will be held at Littlefairs Pond, East Edmondsley Farm, Edmondsley. The contact is J Hardiman on 07857537589.

Wansbeck and Cramlington Angling Club hold an Open Day on Brenkley Pond this Sunday. Finding Brenkley Pond is easy. Access the A1 north to Seaton Burn roundabout, then take the first left and first left again. To book email Ashley Fowler at relwofca@yahoo.co.uk

On July 27, Hexham Anglers Association hold the first junior match on Wydon Water in Hexham. The match is limited to 18 pegs and is a 3pm meet, fishing 4pm to 8 pm. Contact Andrew Jackson on 01434 606032.

On August 12 and 19 from 10am-noon or 1pm-3pm, Blyth Freshwater AC invite juniors aged 8 to 18 to an introduction to coarse fishing, learning fishing techniques using whips and rods.

It will be held on Meggie’s Burn, Blyth, situated off the Blyth Beach Road next to the Blyth Cemetery.

On Thursday July 29 a ‘Turn Up and Try It’ day takes place on Higham Lakes, Higham Dykes, Ponteland. Groups of 8-18-year-olds can learn techniques for fly, coarse and sea fishing with qualified coaches.

On August 1 youngsters aged 8-16 will fish for crabs using a hand line and there will be prizes given to winners.

The event takes place at the promenade outside Glass Centre, Sunderland. The registration area will be directly waterside of the Glass. Paricipants will need to provide their own bucket to store the catch but everything else will be provided. Ben Thompson is the contact for these events on 07854240177.

Diary dates

Sunday: Open Matches are scheduled for The Angel, The Oaks, Woodlands, Carp Vale and Raker Lake. Ferryhill and District fish for their Challenge Bowl on the River Tees. Darlington AC hold an open day at Cleasby Lake, and Yarm AA fish their Parker Adams match on the Tees.

Monday:  Langley Park AC hold an evening series match on Tursdale fishing from 6.30 to 9.30pm.

Tuesday: Tuesday brings a meeting of The Tyne Anglers Alliance to which all member clubs are asked to send a delegate. It takes place at the Empire CIU Club, Salters Road, Gosforth.

Wednesday:  An Open takes place on Woodlands and the Angel.

Thursday: There’s a Midweek Open on The Oaks.

Friday: Another Afternoon match takes place on The Angel while CADCAC fish an evening match on Crofton.
