Jack's day kicks off good week of fishing

THE Jack Charlton's Disabled Children's Fishing Day got the week off to a good start at Sharpley Springs/Water with Chris Wilson from Portland School, Sunderland, receiving the trophy for the heaviest bag at 14lb 7ozs from Jack Charlton.

Emma Booth from Percy Hedley was Girl of the Match, Boy of the Match went to Jack Doughtley from the Cedars and The Sunderland Echo trophy was awarded to Scott Cartledge from Portland.

It was a good week's fishing at Waskerley with plenty top of the water sport. S Pearson had 26 fish and Bill Webster returned a brown estimated at 8lb.

The rising water temperatures pushed the fish deep at Langley Dam where David Sanderson had the heaviest fish of the week with a 5lb 9oz rainbow. There will be a further stocking today.

Extensive weed cutting is being carried out at Knitsley Mill this week. Fishing is expected to start again next week.

Anglers have had to work harder at Chatton Trout Fishery this week with the hot, bright weather conditions making the fish more difficult to find, although those opting to fish intermediate lines enjoyed the most success and dry flies are still working well in the evenings.

The trout at Jubilee Lakes have definitely been trickier with the heat, but those who have done well have caught on patterns such as the Daddy – the Goldhead version doing best, Klinkhammer, Buzzers in a range of colours, Amber Bloodworm, Hare's Ear and, especially, the Damsel.

The catches stayed steady at Naworth even through the very hot and bright days. S Osborne landed the best fish of the week at 10lb.

The evenings produced the best of the sport at Witton Castle Lakes this week due to the hot days and bright skies. The Hoy and Hope Angling club braved the baking temperatures and were handsomely rewarded with Steve Cochrane bagging rainbows of 11lb 12oz, 9lb 13oz and 2lb 6oz for his three-fish bag limit and first prize

Due to the staggering rod average of 13 at the Summer Solstice event, the fishery is holding another all-night session on Friday, July 9. Places can be booked on (01388) 488691.

The fly lake at South Linden has been fishing well throughout the day, but the best sport has been in the early evenings. Good numbers of rainbows and blues have been taken from the bait lake on ledgered or bubble-float fished worms and maggots.

The fishery will be holding a casting clinic on July 11. The event, costing £20, will include a four-hour sporting session and 30 minutes with Level 2 fly fishing coach Kevin Dawson from Rothbury. Places must be booked.

By popular demand, there will be another Ultimate Fly Fishing Course, with the price reduced to £40, including BBQ lunch and a session on the fly lake.
