Alnwick's anglers doing the conger

ALNWICK AC start the winter off with a bumper weigh-in, including the first of the region's elusive big conger.

Scott Howie (pictured below), fishing at Craster, landed the conger of 20lb 5oz, after an arm-aching battle, although the conger was easily the biggest fish.

Even with another small codling Scott was beaten into second place by Anthony Gibbison fishing at Amble with a cracking bag of 14 cod for 34lb 12oz, including cod of 7lb and 5lb. Andrew Stanton was third with six cod for 15-2-0.

The first of the big cod are showing. Shaun Rossin at Cambois took the week’s biggest fish at 14lb. David Wood landed one just over 10lb at Seaham North Pier.

There are plenty of small codling around on most beaches. Chris Stringer fished Whitley Beach, taking 16 fish in 15 casts for around 30lb, the best 3lb.

Michael McNenamin fished at Embleton taking 11 cod for 25lb, best 4lb. Trevor Green, fishing south of the Wear with ragworm, took 18 cod for with the best around 3lb, taking home 24lb of prime cod. Stu Carr, fishing with him, took 15 fish, taking home 10lb of cod, both returning quite a few fish.

Mick Welsh and Ivan Stott fished Lynemouth and took four cod each on the ebb. Davey Keeller and Paul Gallon had a couple of sessions just north of West Bay taking fish each trip with the best to 5lb.

Decent bags of fish came from most marks between Blyth and the Tyne in the Northumberland Sea League match, Brad Hill taking the biggest bag of four cod for 11-7-0 and heaviest fish of 8-8-0 from the Tyne, Steve Williams taking 5 for 10-15-0. Tony Anderson took 6 for 10-11-8 from Blyth Beach, Paul Golightly taking 5 for 8-10-0 from Whitley Beach.

Ken Middlemist fished at Craster to win Amble’s match with three cod for 8-12-4, his best 6-5-4, T Raine was second with a cod of 4-4-12.

Marsden produced the winning bag in Cleadon’s match, Paul Harrison taking a mixed bag for 10-4-0, Richard Lansbury taking the heaviest fish of 6-1-0 from North Row Ends.

Mixed bags are coming from the Tyne estuary. Steve Harper won Tynemouth’s Harry Hall Cup with eight whiting, one coalfish and a dab for 6-12-0. The Wear produced some decent codling, Steve Rackstraw taking one of 4-1-0 to win Ryhope’s sweepstake, Chris Hossack taking six codling for 3.970kgs from the High Ledge to win Eastenders match.

Roker pier is also producing mixed bags Liam Simpson winning Ryhope’s club match with three cod, one whiting for 4.005kgs, Colin Edmundson taking the heaviest at 2.515kgs. Alan Walker took three cod and two whiting for 6-8-0, best 1-8-0 to win Sunderland’s match.
