Coarse angling

Sunderland FAC fished their inaugural Honorary President’s Trophy on Sunday around the big island, where Iain Foster won with five carp for 20lb 4oz.

John Stephenson was runner-up with 14lb 10oz and Kevin Duncton was third with 14lb 6oz of skimmers and roach.

Hurworth Burn Reservoir near Trimdon was the venue for Hartlepool and District’s match on Sunday, where Eddie Bridon won with 19lb of roach and perch.

A meeting of The Angling Development Board for the Tyne and Wear region went ahead on Monday where Ben Thompson, North East Regional Development Officer and Jackie Sheldon, Senior Development Manager explained that angling is now officially recognised as a sport by The Sports Council.

Being a sport, rather than a hobby, pastime or even a branch of natural history, means angling is now applicable to qualify for funding for development.

However, to qualify for grant money, angling organisations must adhere to an established Sports Council framework of qualified and recognised coaches.

While the amount of anglers continue to increase, it could be Britain’s biggest participant sport does more to aid employment than help itself.

Only this week, The Angling Trust highlighted that through rod licence sales alone, anglers contribute £24m to the Environment Agency, a lot less than is put back into fishing.
