Diamond haul a winner for Wilkes

A CRACKING day saw some cracking fish taken in the Ian Wood boat competition, with Brian Wilkes, aboard White Diamond, taking the best of a 60-fish haul, which included over 20 double-figured fish, with a beast of a ling of 19lb 8oz to win.
If it had been down to looks, then it would have been Norman White’s cod that would have taken the day.
Deciding to have a drop 200 yards off the piers in his boat , Slinky Kate, with a little pink muppet baited with ragworm, Norman landed a beauty of a cod, 16lb 8oz. He was just ahead of Bill Campbell with a ling of 16lb 7oz. taken aboard Star Dance. Gareth Thomas won the under 20-foot section with a cod of 8lb 14oz.
The same day, Dave Swift won his first major event taking three cod from Cresswell Carrs, for 9lb 6oz eight drams to win the North Region CIU match. Steve Potts took the heaviest fish of 4-4-6 from the Big Bondi Carr. Carl Foot may have lost 168lb in weight over the last year but his fish of 1530grms (3.37lb) taken at Marsden won him the top prize of £500 in the Ryhope Open. Gary Warwick was second with a wrasse of 1200grms taken at Whitburn.
Seven-year-old Adam Harriman’s face was a delight to see as he collected his prize for winning the junior section with a flounder of 530grms. Jackie Feeney won the ladies section with one of 550grms.
Jim Dobie took the heaviest bag of four flounders, including the heaviest a cracker of 935grms (2.01lb) and an eel for 3215grms (7.08lb).
Jim followed this win up taking a lovely bass of 5lb 1oz from Hendon Bandstand, to win Eastenders’ sweepstake, which also saw Chris Hossack take a cod of 4-14-0 from Roker Pier.
Quite a few codling are around the Ryhope area, the top four places in their sweepstake going to codling, with Gary Warwick taking the best at 2.46lb.
Andy Wright enjoyed a pleasure session on South Shields pier. Using Sabiki feathers, Andy took 15 sizeable coalfish. Ronnie Thompson won Cleadon’s match from the Tyne with three cod, best 2-1-0 and a whiting for 4-1-0.
North of the Tyne Alan sprat won Seaton Sluice’s sweepstake with six cod for 11-8-0 taken at amble, Jimmy Dunne taking the heaviest of 4-8-0 in his bag of five for 8-14-0.
