Langley is good spot for heavy catches

ROTHBURY angler Keith Young has landed the biggest brown trout of the season to date on the River Coquet – his 5lb 1oz fish was 34 inches long with a girth of 12 inches and was taken on worm in the Rothbury area.

The good fishing continued at Langley Dam this week with K Messenger recording both the heaviest fish at 8lb 4oz and the heaviest bag with three for 14lb 12oz. There will be a stocking of browns and rainbows next week (June 11).

The wind finally turned around at Sweethope Loughs bringing a rise in temperatures and good hatches from small blacks to large olives. Large sedges and daddy longlegs were also seen on the water surface.

Anglers matching the hatch this week included Peter Lewin who safely returned 11 rainbows to 5lb and a 7lb, Mickey Bell from Gateshead who put back 12 and Ian Fairgreaves from Ashington who also brought 12 to the net.

Neil Irwin from Barrasford landed and returned 10 while Graeme Sanderson returned 10, Paul Riches caught and put back eight, Stuart Younger from Blyth also returned eight, Brian Vickers from Chopwell returned seven and boat pair Ken Wandless and Bill Emery shared 28. Ashington Kingfishers had 10 boats on the top lough, returning 123 fish with rainbows to 5lb 6oz and blues to 7lb.

It was a good week at Jubilee Lakes with excellent dry sport, particularly on the top lake. When the wind cooled, emergers and hoppers have worked just sub-surface. Damsels or the Olive Zonker have done well deeper down as have Bloodworms and Red Buzzers.

Doubles this week went to Jonathan Howe from Hartlepool who took a 17lb 7oz rainbow while Sean Dorothy from Sunderland had one of 11lb 14oz and 11-year-old Ben Davison from Thornaby took a rainbow weighing in at10lb 2oz.

South Shields anglers Les Brown and Paul Wood had a good first visit to Hadrian Fishery with Les bringing six rainbows to the net while Paul had five. Steve Mason of Haltwhistle, fishing a dry Black hawthorn, landed a cracking brown of 8lb 9ozs. The bounty on the fishery’s tagged fish is now £180.

The best of the sport at Sharpley Springs this week has been in the late evenings with anglers staying on to 10.30pm to take advantage of excellent rises. E Harvey safely returned nine, including a superbly-condition 11-pounder. Tim Cardno had a 10-pounder while D Chin took a fine 17lb rainbow trout and Ken Bowes and T Rouly each had ten-pounders. Brian Corkhill was also among the fish, bringing 22 to the net.
