THE unsettled conditions have once again severely hampered boat and shore anglers.
Dave Hayley took the only decent bag of fish I have heard of in Tynemouth’s match at Eyemouth, when only three anglers made the journey. Dave took two cod, the best 5lb 10oz, and a wrasse for 12lb 3oz. David Craig took a cod and a wrasse for 5-5-0 and Marty Elliott a wrasse of 3-4-0.
A few cod to 6lb have also been reported from the rock edges around Craster. The choppy seas have curtailed pier fishing for mackerel and plaice with only the odd dab, coalfish, and flounder taken in club matches.
Tony Taylor won Tynemouth’s retired members match with a dab of 7oz. Steve Elliott won their Sunday league match with a flounder of 1-1-0. The best place for any sport has been the rivers, although catches there have also dropped.
There have still been some decent sized flounders in the Wear. Stan Preston won zone A in Eastenders’ sweepstake match at Lambton Drops with one of 1-11-0, all anglers in zone B failing to catch.
The Students’ accommodation gave Geoff Moon a flounder of 1-1-8 in East End & Hendon’s sweepstake match, with Mick Davison winning ZA and Jim Dobie ZB in Ryhope’s sweepstake match at the Glass Centre with flounders of 1-2-0.
The Tyne has been poor with only the odd codling, flounder, or coalfish taken.
Bert and Kyle Gray, along with Keith Brown, fished from 4.45am, returning early at 7.45am, aboard “Shady” and took 24 cod, with not a single mackerel taken. Bert was top angler taking 11 and the best at 6lb, Keith taking six and Kyle seven. All fish fell to fresh crab tipped with squid. Richard Roll, out on Andrew Curtis’s boat, had a reasonable session off Souter, taking cod to 7lb on daylights baited with mackerel or squid. The Newbiggin AGM takes place on Monday, June 2, at the Bank House club. The Bob White memorial boat competition takes place on July 19 at Amble – call (01665) 711200.
