Caistron’s stocked up and ready to go

A DOUBLE stocking of quality fish up to 18lb has set the scene for Saturday’s fly and Sunday’s worm competitions at Caistron Lakes where B Jackson had the heaviest fish of the week with a 12lb 8oz rainbow taken on a Black Buzzer.

With good numbers of fish now showing on the surface, sport has picked up and Cramlington angler J Rutherford had four for 14lb while D Nuttall safely returned eight taken on Buzzers.

Plenty of fly action has seen the swallows return in large numbers to Sharpley Springs where Lee Scullion, fishing a Pinkie Bloodworm, brought a 17lb fish to the net. Steve Fish safely returned a 10-pounder to the Hangman’s Lake and Dave Morris put a 14-pounder back in the Doxford Lake. The improved weather also led to a good week’s sport at Hadrian fishery with Fenham angler David Story, fishing Black Fritz and Nomad, landing two well-conditioned rainbows for 7lb 4oz. Catch-and-release angler Roger Taylor of Denton had a good day’s sport with several fish up to 4lb on Yellow Fritz. Hadrian newcomer Johnathan Lloyd of Gilsland in Northumberland also had a good day, using Black Pennell and Viva to land two rainbows for 8lb.

Spring has arrived early at Jubilee Lakes Rod with and trout are now regularly taking buzzers – still mainly black. Black buzzers with a goldhead have also taken their share of fish, although this week’s double figure fish fell to Zonkers.

South Shields angler Andy Hudson took the week’s heaviest fish at 16lb 11oz on a Grizzle Zonker, while Andrew Stephenson from Great Ayton used a Black Zonker to land his 14lb 6oz rainbow

Knitsley Mill continues to fish well with good numbers of fish in the 3lb to 5lb being brought to net on a variety of flies

The warmer weather saw good fly hatches bring fish on to the feed at Sweethope which is now a Troutmasters venue for 2008. Boat anglers recorded good bags with G Sanderson from Cramlington using Hare’s Ear Nymphs to great effect to bring 23 to the net. Tony Barclay and Frank Toole from Shotley Bridge safely returned 20 that had fallen to various patterns while Gavin Breeze safely returned 15 taken on Buzzers, coming back the following day with Peter Smith to bring 19 more to the net on Diawl Bach and Kate McLarens.
