All children really want for Christmas is for their parents to quit smoking. VICKY ROBSON reports on some success stories

WHAT do your children want for Christmas? If you’re a smoker, the chances are their best present would be you quitting.
A third (32%) of youngsters in the region would go without presents for the sake of their parents’ health, according to a new survey by the Department of Health.
More than 56% would be willing to give up their pocket money, 75% would commit to doing their homework every night, and 74% would go to bed when told, to see their mums and dads stub out cigarettes for good.
“This research just shows how much kids love their parents and how unselfish kids can be. It’s a terrifying thought to think of your mum or dad dying when you are so young,” says Ailsa Rutter, director of FRESH Smoke Free North East.
“Every mum and dad wants to be around to watch their kids grow, experience the wonderful moments like riding a bike, winning at football, or walking up the aisle.
“Smoking tragically robs too many parents of being around to see these moments. Quitting smoking will be treasured by your loved ones more than the most expensive gift.
“What’s more it’s free, will save you a packet, and the benefits last long after the tinsel has come down.”
Grandmother-of-two Sharon Dodds, from Gateshead, is one success story who used laser acupuncture to stop smoking after suffering from two chest infections this year.
The 43-year-old managed to kick her 25 to 30-a-day habit after having the treatment just four weeks ago and is already feeling the benefits.
“I had tried using nicotine patches, but they just made me feel sick,” says Sharon, who has smoked on and off since she was 14.
“My family can’t believe I’ve managed to stop. My three sons are over the moon because they can’t stand it. They just wish their dad would give it up now too.”
Laser acupuncture involves three treatments, on day one, day three and day seven of quitting. It works by stimulating endorphin release similar to the effects of nicotine.
Sarah Gilmour, clinic manager and nurse practitioner at Paramount Healthcare, in Newcastle, who offer the treatment, said: “It’s a more effective way of stopping smoking than using nicotine because it’s completely drug-free.”
Now smoke-free, Sharon is looking forward to the healthiest Christmas she’s had in 30 years.
“It’s just like a miracle. I feel like I can breathe again. I feel cleaner, my tastebuds are better and the money I’m saving now is great.
“Now I think a lot of the time it’s just mind over matter,” she adds.
