Get set for Great North Run

Fitness expert David Fairlamb gives his final tips for Great North runners.

THIS is it, one day to go to the Great North Run and you should be excited and looking forward to the challenge rather then worrying and viewing it as a problem.

My First tip is that you enjoy the run and be sensible.

Medical Advice

I would advise that if you don’t feel well on the day or have recently had flu and are still not 100% don’t run.

You can defer your entry until next year, it’s very important that you look after yourself. Watch it on the TV and aim for bigger and better things in next year’s race.

Great North Run Day

Before the run

:: Be prepared – make your morning stress-free. Have your running kit, number and safety pins ready.

:: Stick with your normal breakfast that you would have before any training session.

:: Drink a sensible amount of water up to one hour before the start. If you are not used to drinking much water avoid suddenly drinking two litres before the run.

:: Avoid wearing any new running gear or trainers for the first time on the run. This may cause blisters, rubbing rashes or simply be uncomfortable which could make your run pretty unpleasant.

:: Get to the start in plenty of time. Make sure you’re in the correct zone.

:: Depending on the temperature take the appropriate gear to keep warm.
