THERE are many options in the pursuit of enhancing health and performance levels, but which one will be the one that really works for you? Two weeks ago we investigated what it was we were training for and why we needed to train. This week we look in greater depth at what movements are specific to us.
Simplify it
The best way to achieve training gains is to work with a well-qualified trainer. Think of the reasons why you might need exercise and what aspects of health, movement and performance would enhance your life. This is an important step because I often find that this is the first barrier to overcome when making the decision to become more active.
By Function Design
When asking this question to my clients we can generate a list of activities and movements that often consists of those listed below:
Walking, sitting, getting up and down, playing with the kids, gardening, DIY, sports, carrying, shopping, building and running.
These can be boiled down to common movement patterns that include, but are not limited to, the following:
Walking, lifting, squatting, bending, sitting, running, pushing, pulling, stepping, jumping, twisting. Our capacity to live each day with sustained energy levels, free from pain, injury and ailments can be determined by our ability to perform these movements efficiently.
Programming Movement
A programme designed specifically for you is essential. It will address your imbalances, health and fitness requirements.
Many of these movement demands will be common among us, but there are subtle differences too. Most clear-cut are sport specific movements, but your training may be different if you look after children and there is a lot of floor work and lifting performed.
The information in this column is to give you the opportunity to make changes. Don’t be satisfied with persistent injuries, fatigue, poor sleep, declining health. Challenge the norm and find out what works for you.
