Getting in shape for the Northern Rock Cyclone Challenge!

WITH the Northern Rock Cyclone cycling event taking place this week from Friday, June 13 to 15, Andrew Hurst, supervisor at Escape Gym, the official Northern Rock Gym, has pulled together his top tips for enjoying cycling safely.

Andrew said: “It’s events like the Cyclone which really bring home how fitness can be fun – involving people of all ages and all levels of fitness.

“Cycling is a really accessible sport which transcends all ages – real fun for all the family.

“There should be more events like the Northern Rock Cyclone across the region and further afield, but while people are getting geared up for the big event, it’s important they are preparing for it the right way.”

Andrew’s Top Ten Cyclone training tips

1. Warm Up

If you don’t exercise regularly, or have an injury or a medical condition that may cause a problem, check with your GP before beginning any training plan. Secondly, start each session with a thorough warm-up – it should last around 10 to 15 minutes with stretches being held for at least 15 to 20 seconds.

2. Set your target/know your aim

Plan and devise your training program around the relevant distance, event or desired fitness level.

3. Food is Fuel

Make sure you are consuming enough calories to fuel your exercise programme. Insufficient calories will result in a lack of energy, and will be detrimental to your training.

4. Set-up

Always make sure your cycle is set up correctly for your individual profile. This will include seat height and handle bar height.

5. Maintenance

Make sure your cycle is in good working order before you ride it. Check tyres, chain and pedals, for example.

6. Clothing/Accessories

Wear the appropriate kit, namely a helmet. You may also want to wear padded shorts/use a gel saddle cover, cycling shoes, sunglasses and an accessory belt to carry additional fluids/food. Make sure you’re wearing the right sunscreen and are carrying some with you on the day. Lights/reflectors are a must if cycling when dark.

7. Highway Code

Make yourself aware of road safety before cycling on main roadways.

8. Supplies

Carry sufficient fluids and food for the duration of your route.

9. Awareness

If taking part in an event such as the Cyclone, always make yourself aware of, and understand, the event organisers’ guidelines and instructions.

10. Aftercare

Make sure you do a correct cool-down, stretch and re-fuel, making sure you drink plenty of water and stay hydrated.
