Winter weddings

Winter is a magical season to tie the knot, but what about the dress? Francesca Craggs offers a real life bride-to-be some inspiration

WINTER is an especially romantic time of year, so why not stand out from the crowd and tie the knot during this magical season?

Winter weddings are growing in popularity and provide the opportunity to inject a touch of drama into your theme.

And when it comes to choosing the dress, winter brides can go as opulent and glamorous as they dare. From theatrical red wedding gowns to Hollywood-style feather boleros – the options are endless.

Our model, stunning bride-to-be Jo Anderson, recently embarked on the quest to find that perfect wedding gown. The 25-year-old, from Brunswick Green in Wide Open, will marry fiancé Mark next year. Their “contemporary themed” wedding will take place at Sacred Heart Church in Wide Open, followed by a reception at Close House Hotel in Heddon-on-the-Wall. At 5ft 8 inches, Jo wanted a straight style to suit her elegant figure. Local bridal designer Leigh Hetherington’s Olivia two-piece, in ivory silk with bow detail, was a firm favourite.

Leigh, who has a store in Old Eldon Square, Newcastle, recently launched her third collection.

She said: “A lot of winter brides choose full skirted designs with a matching bolero or jacket. Dresses with an accent colour are popular and a great way of tying in a theme. I also have requests for gowns in red, golds and coffee, which look stunning during the Christmas period.”

Pronuptia in Newcastle also has a wealth of winter wedding designs to choose from. You’ll find a stunning red dress from its English range, as well as an unusual grey fishtail gown with matching bolero by Justin Alexander.

Jo said: “I’ve really enjoyed doing the shoot and it’s been great to try on so many different styles.

“I still don't know what type of dress to choose, but it’s inspired me to make some appointments now, rather than leaving it closer to the time.”
