This season the new trend for ladylike looks could be the perfect feminine fashion tonic, as Liz Lamb discovers.
LOOK like a lady this summer in frills, floral and pretty dresses. The ladylike look is the perfect tonic if you’ve been bogged down by jeans, jumpsuits and boyfriend blazers.
British designer Luella Bartley channelled the look in her spring/summer collection, which showed full-on prim-and-proper suiting and floral prom dresses.
Luella’s designs, which she dubbed ‘Princess Margaret on Acid’, were all about English eccentricity with a twist – traditional tweeds in shock shades of orange and purple, frilled dresses with quirky asymmetric details and black veils teamed with girly pastels.
To follow the trend here are the key looks to remember:
Ditsy florals, as seen at Laura Ashley. Stick to straight pretty florals if you’re a prefect type but style rebels can mix it up with clashing candy-striped trousers, as seen on Luella’s catwalk. One shoulder flashing styles and nipped-in waists were also key details on her floral prom dresses.
Tweed suiting – think twinsets with attitude. Keep the look young by choosing cute cropped jackets and don’t be scared to adorn them with colourful statement brooches.
Sorbet brights – Look out for purple, orange and hot pink and if you want to be extra bold, mix it all up and wear two or three brights together.
Think of accessorising as the finishing school of ladylike fashion. Pick up prim court shoes, strings of pearls, dress gloves and bow hairpieces with veils.
