Rebecca Young takes a look at the new Lauren Hutton collection for Mango.
IN the past, it seemed that large numbers of women were routinely ignored by the high street when it came to trend-led, stylish fashion pieces.
Designer collaborations only seemed to cater for those in their teens or twenties. Kate Moss for Topshop and Giles Deacon for New Look are perfect examples of this.
But now big name retailers are starting to realise that women of a certain age can attract customers into their stores. Take the Marks & Spencer campaign – Twiggy and Erin O’Connor certainly give the younger models, Myleene Klass and Lily Cole, a run for their money, proving that stylish, wearable fashion can transcend all ages.
Retailers are learning that having these women in their campaigns is attracting a different type of shopper – the woman who has the confidence to experiment with styles that only comes from years of experience (and perhaps one or two fashion faux-pas!)
At the same time, age boundaries are breaking down. These days you are just as likely to see a 50-something woman shopping in Topshop as you are in Marks & Spencer.
Bearing this in mind, Spanish retailers Mango have stepped in with their We Love You, Lauren campaign for Autumn Winter 2008/9.
Throughout 64-year-old Lauren Hutton’s career she has graced no less than 27 covers of fashion bible Vogue and was one of the first supermodels who was instantly recognised by her gap-toothed smile. She has also starred in several advertising campaigns, as well as acting in films alongside Robert Redford, Richard Gere and Gérard Depardieu. She now has her own make-up range in America as well as continuing her modelling career.
We Love You, Lauren features wearable, classic pieces that are effortlessly stylish as well as being practical and comfortable. There are instant day-to-day office wear updates in the tweed pencil skirt and sweater combination. For evening wear there’s the beautiful floral silk knee-length skirt or, for those a little more daring, a brightly coloured, scoop-neck dress.
