Tyneside Cinema hosting string quartet concert

TYNESIDE Cinema in Newcastle proves it has yet another string to its bow as it hosts a fundraising performance of classical music.

On Saturday, a local string quartet will play in the Tyneside Bar to raise money for the Clarence Adoo Trust named after the legendary musician.

The Leland Schmidt Quartet is made up of violinists Ian Reaveley and Jenny Williams, both from Monkseaton; viola player Luke Waterfield, described as a “converted Southerner” who is studying for a Masters in Music at Newcastle University; and cello player Mark Carroll who moved to North Tyneside from York in 1998.

Inspired by the theme of loss and new beginnings, they’ll play two new pieces by Mark – String Quartet No. 1 in G: 365 More Days and Epilogue for String Quartet – plus three pieces of modern string quartet music, including Shostakovich’s String Quartet No. 8 in C minor.

The quartet formed in January specifically for this event, and money raised from ticket sales will go to the trust in honour of the trumpeter paralysed following a road accident in 1995.

Mark said: “Not only is this a great opportunity to bring live classical music into this wonderful venue, but it is also a fantastic way to raise money for Clarence’s trust and give something back to a man whose courage is legendary and whose dedication to the North East musical scene was inspirational.”

Tickets priced £5 to the 9.30pm performance are available from www.tynesidecinema.co.uk, the box office or by calling 0845 217 9909.
