Ladysmith return to fill The Sage with rhythm

Ladysmith Black Mambazo

THE rhythms and harmonies of native South Africa and gospel return to The Sage Gateshead this weekend.

Ladysmith Black Mambazo who, for the past 30 years have been vocalising the struggles and passions of their homeland, will be stopping off from their longest-ever tour at 7.30pm this Sunday.

Known for melding native South African musical traditions with the sounds and sentiments of Christian gospel music, their celebration of the end of the apartheid era led Nelson Mandela, on his release from prison, to dub them South Africa’s cultural ambassadors.

The group, whose album Ilembe: Honoring Shaka Zulu won a Grammy in the Best Traditional World Music category, have built up a fan base around the world with their unique blend of a cappella and mbube music – loud, powerful choruses contrasting with softer, whispering chants – and rhythmic dance moves.

Sunday’s performance will also feature Netsayi, who released her second album Chosen Ones, this summer.

Her mix of pop and folk and her Zimbabwean roots results in a moving expression of hope and despair, love and loss, and ideas of home and abroad.

Ladysmith Black Mambazo and special guest Netsayi are at The Sage Gateshead on Sunday from 7.30pm. Visit www.thesagegateshead.org or call (0191) 443-4661.
