Preview: Simon Munnery at The Stand, Newcastle

Simon Munnery

THE curious world of experimental comedian Simon Munnery will unfold tomorrow night at The Stand comedy club in Newcastle.

There’s a flavour of his cryptic brand of comedy in the title – Hats Off To The 101ers, And Other Material.

Rather than showing respect to the elderly, Munnery’s show is actually a somewhat surreal nod to the R101 airship of 1930.

The R101 was a long-distance airship whose crash in France on its maiden voyage – killing 48 people including many of the officials and designers involved in its creation – was a sorry end to British airship development.

It’s featured here alongside a blast of poetry, jokes, anecdotes and monologues as Munnery transfers his Edinburgh Fringe success to our city centre comedy club where audiences can also expect – as part of what’s described as an “overly ambitious one-man punk musical” – a mixed mess of foaming bubble hats, bad guitar riffs and even a plum (or some other fruit).

Simon Munnery is at The Stand, High Bridge, Newcastle, tomorrow night at 8.30pm. For tickets, call 0844 693 3336. For the upcoming line-up, which includes local favourites The Suggestibles on February 2, visit www.thestand.co.uk
