POETRY lovers can enjoy a taste of Scotland and Jamaica next week when Newcastle plays host to a free festival event featuring writer Kei Miller.
In a collaboration with Scotland’s StAnza poetry festival, New Writing North is welcoming the Jamaican poet and novelist, who also teaches at the University of Glasgow and is an editor of New Caribbean Poetry.
Kei, whose first collection was called There is an Anger that Moves, is soon to publish his latest collection, A Light Song of Light, and a novel, The Last Warner Woman.
At 6.30pm next Tuesday, February 16, he will give a reading of his work at Gallery North at Northumbria University.
The audience will also hear from Eleanor Livingstone, artistic director of StAnza where Kei is poet in residence.
This special event is a preview of StAnza, which this year will showcase 100 poets, musicians, artists and writers over five days from March 17-21, in atmospheric venues around the ancient town centre of St Andrews.
New Writing North will provide the refreshments for Tuesday’s event which is free but will need to be booked by contacting olivia@newwritingnorth.com or calling 0191 233 3850.
Gallery North is in the Squires Building at Northumbria University in Sandyford Road. Visit www.gn.northumbria.ac.uk for directions.
