Jaw-dropping cinema nears

THE region's first digital IMAX cinema screen is due to open at Gateshead MetroCentre on December 16.

In the fast developing world of cinema technology, there are always novelties around the corner – but the people behind the new Odeon Gateshead are confident they are going to make jaws drop.

The new Odeon MetroCentre will have 12 screens including the IMAX with its digital capabilities.

Here’s what they say: “IMAX offers the world’s most immersive big screen film experience with crystal clear digital images in 2D or IMAX 3D combined with state-of-the-art, laser-aligned sound and a customised auditorium layout for maximum impact.”

Its capabilities will be put to the test over the cinema’s opening weekend with screenings of James Cameron’s new 3D blockbuster, Avatar.

Odeon Metrocentre will be located at the heart of its new Qube entertainment and dining mall.

The cinema will sell Ben & Jerry’s ice-cream and Costa coffee and will have two new bars – the Ambar and, for cinema-goers with gallery tickets, the Gallery Bar.

Odeon MetroCentre will host film seasons for all audiences.

Odeon Newbies will be aimed at parents with new babies and will have lower volume and slightly higher lighting.

Odeon Director’s Chair will present films from around the world – art-house, independent and foreign language.

Odeon Senior Screen is aimed at what Odeon MetroCentre call “our mature guests”.

There will be free tea and coffee before screenings and films shown will focus on story-telling.

Odeon Kids will take place on Saturday and Sunday mornings and a free adult ticket will be given with every child ticket bought.
