Performance of the Year Award: We Got Mittens Too!

CUSTODIAN Co-director Maurice OConnell, with a pile of mittens knitted especially for the promenade play.

AT the heart of We Got Mittens Too! was a desire to fittingly commemorate the 90th anniversary of the end of the First World War in November 2008 within the walls of the Lit & Phil and the Mining Institute, Newcastle.

The inspiration for the show came from the archives and collections housed in the buildings, as well as the stories of the real men and women, the members and the staff, some who fought at the front and some who were left behind.

Kay Easson’s original idea and text were skillfully developed and moulded by Cinzia Hardy, Alison Andrews and Maurice O’Connell.

They were joined by three new collaborators, Julia Barton, Imogen Cloet and Katie Doherty as well as a mixture of professional and non-professional actors, students from Newcastle College, musicians and members of the Northumbria Army Cadet Force.

Kay Easson says: “For this new piece of work to be shortlisted for Performance of the Year is a great tribute to those it remembers, as well as an honour for everyone involved in the piece.”
