COMMUNITY leaders last night reacted with disgust to the thieves’ behaviour.
Les Sage, coordinator of Morpeth Lions’ campaign to raise money to help regeneration after the floods, said: "This was totally premeditated and it’s disgusting. To commit these crimes against people who have suffered so much is inexcusable.
"There always seems to be somebody who will take advantage of other people’s hardship, but sadly that just seems to be a fact of life these days.
"I’m picking up a cheque tonight that will take our fundraising total to £208,000, so that just goes to show how much good there is in this town. And then you get low lives like this."
Retired teacher Rhona Dunn, who spent months working alongside the local rotary club to distribute furniture to homes devastated by the floods, said the two thieves sentences should have been harsher.
She said: "It’s disgusting. They should’ve been given a couple of years in prison."
