“The fans will give Shearer time to get things right, if they bring in someone else that person won’t get the same time and we may see the club looking for yet another new manager.
“It would be a costly mistake not to sign Shearer up now, it could well be Ashley’s biggest mistake if he doesn’t.”
Newcastle fan and MP for Blyth Valley Ronnie Campbell added his voice to those advising Ashley to sign up Shearer sooner rather than later.
He said: “They need to sign Shearer. It is a must. We will not get a better manager. Just look at the list of managers they have had, it has been one disaster after another. Ashley didn’t have a clue what he was taking on when he bought the club. He will get a lot more money for if Shearer is the manager I am sure.”
And Malcolm Shiels, chairman of the Newcastle United Supporters Club, agreed.
He said: “It would be a colossal mistake if Shearer was to leave the club now.
“We speak to lots of fans all the time and many are still wavering over whether to renew seasons tickets even if Shearer stays. If he were to leave I think most would decide not to bother. It would affect ticket sales and marketing and everything else.
“If Shearer doesn’t stay this club could be on a slippery slope. It would be a horrendous decision for the club.
And Mark Jensen editor of fanzine The Mag said: “Alan Shearer is the only show in town, its time for him to be in full control of the club.”
