THOUSANDS of people have already snapped up tickets for the hit show Mamma Mia! as it prepares to come to the North East for its only UK dates this year.

The spectacular musical based on ABBA songs has taken over the globe with millions flocking to see it, and now it's set to wow crowds in Newcastle over the Christmas period.

More than 120,000 people are expected to see the show at the Metro Radio Arena, and it marks a boost for the North East as the last time the touring version was seen in Britain was early last year, when it enjoyed a run of sell-out shows in Glasgow.

The spectacular event will run from December 12 to January 10 with 3,000 tickets available for each show, and you can buy them by clicking here. 

Inspired by the story-telling magic of ABBA’s timeless songs, writer Catherine Johnson’s enchanting tale of family and friendship unfolds on a Greek island paradise.

On the eve of her wedding, a daughter’s quest to discover the identity of her father brings three men from her mother’s past back to the island they last visited 20 years ago.

Colin Revel, executive director of the Arena, said: "We are very pleased with how sales have gone, it is going very, very well.

"Due to the volume of sales, the processing is taking a bit longer than usual, so we are asking people to be patient.

"But it is obvious audiences in the North East know a good night out."
